Omar is the Republican candidate for United States Congress in California’s 52nd District (coastal San Diego). Prior to moving back home to his native Southern California, Omar worked for the U.S. Department of Defense. Among his assignments, Omar was a Prosecutor in the Office of the Chief Prosecutor of Military Commissions where he was proud to have a support role to a team that prosecuted alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammad and four alleged co-conspirators for 9/11, the alleged mastermind of the USS Cole bombing trial, and other serious cases as well as investigations. For 18 months, Omar served as a civilian Defense Department official in Afghanistan where he advised the International Security Assistance Force Command and was Political Advisor to the NATO Ambassador. Omar has participated in or led overseas investigations of captured members of terrorist networks and was detailed to the State Department where he led and developed foreign prosecutions of Guantanamo detainees. 

The son of immigrants from Afghanistan who grew up in a failing public education system in a city with mostly minorities, Omar lived the failed policies he is fighting against. Achieving the American dream, Omar is committed to ensuring all of America’s children have a shot at a bright future and that every American family can achieve the American dream. 

Omar holds a B.A. in Philosophy from UCLA, J.D. from Syracuse Law School, M.A. in International Relations from The Maxwell School of Public Affairs at Syracuse, and M.S. in Public Relations from The S.I. Newhouse School of Communications at Syracuse. 

Omar is a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserve.
